LIGHTBODY 2
FILM SCHOOL

FINAL YEAR PROJECT

As a sequel to the existing, Lightbody 2 is a film school with sustainability at its core. Through adaptive reuse of an existing warehouse and an additional timber frame extension, I have created a dynamic learning environment that celebrates the area’s history and provides a creative hub for students and the public to interact. A series of outdoor spaces encourage exploration and provide a connection to the surroundings, as well as an improved relationship with the historic canal that sits adjacent to the site. An open-air cinema and terrace garden on the roof of the newly built section invites the public to appreciate the school as a new commodity. Areas of permeable polycarbonate cladding provide natural diffused light during the day and glow at night, sparking life into a developing area and creating intrigue. The building revolves around a central courtyard within the warehouse, trees and vegetation fill the space and create an unexpected sensory experience within the existing building, giving the students a connection to nature. The new section is copper clad, a material that is 100% recyclable and develops over time through oxidisation, meaning the building will adapt and change in colour and texture as it ages. Light touch interventions of the existing make use of retained structure, with the admin block re-clad in polycarbonate and the warehouse simply repainted to revive the brickwork. Sections of roof and walls are removed with a steel deck added at first floor level making the building fit for purpose.
